How does DeRegt get cable buoyancy just right?

Buoyancy is an upward force exerted by a fluid that opposes the weight of an immersed object. If an umbilical cable is too light it will pull an ROV up, which makes piloting fiendishly difficult when manoeuvring through offshore structures.

How do we prevent dangerous overheating in your cable?

When working with cables in shallow water, relatively less of the cable will be submerged while the rest of it is wound on a drum on the vessel. In deep water applications, where relatively more of it is deployed, water provides a cooling effect for the cable when it is subjected to electrical currents.

Driven by solutions: Phil Roscoe on the new future-proof extrusion room

A central component of our cables is a stranded copper wire, which is able to conduct electricity. Around it we extrude a continuous layer of plastic to isolate the copper from its surrounding environment. Twisting this together with other components, forms our custom designed cable.

Why do we need Flexible Terminations?

Space is always scarce on board ships and submarines in particular, which means that the smaller Sonar or ROV systems can be, the better. A tailor-made cable with a small diameter and bend radius helps keep the winch as small as possible, reducing the overall footprint of the system. A logical step you can take to reduce system size is opting for a flexible termination for towed arrays, with the same bend radius as the cable, as this allows the entire rig, including both the cable and the array, to be rolled up on the same winch.

The right ROV-cable: extending lifetime and maximizing performance

Right now, more than thousand work-class ROVs worldwide are doing their work underwater. They’re used for various tasks, such as repairs and maintenance, trench digging and drilling. Because these activities are taking place at increasingly great depths, ROV manufacturers face the challenge of coming up with innovative solutions to make sure the lifetime of these cables is sufficient. To extend this lifetime, there are a couple of things to be considered.

This is important, as cables are one of the most important parts of a system in a lot of industrial applications. But how do you make sure there's less failure and a better performance, while saving on costs? Let's dive deeper into that.
